S&T Telescopes

Our Story

Our story starts in 2002, long before "S&T Telescopes" existed as a name. Back then we were simply S&T Group, a small Colombo publisher with a big obsession: getting Sri Lankans looking up at the sky. We published the country's first dedicated astronomy books, translated science fiction from writers like Arthur C. Clarke and Andy Weir into Sinhala, and put out Tharulowa, an astronomy magazine that ran for over a decade. Alongside the books, we started selling the telescopes and binoculars people actually needed to use what they'd learned, and slowly became known as the only real telescope specialists in the country.

That instinct to teach, not just sell, led us to found IOAS, the Institute of Astronomy, Sri Lanka, in 2018. It became Sri Lanka's first dedicated astronomy learning institute, and it grew fast: certificate courses, GCSE astronomy classes, Olympiad training that's sent Sri Lankan students to international competitions, and free public lectures every month, for anyone who wanted in. But what we're proudest of is that IOAS was never just a classroom. Our team has published real research, on dwarf galaxies, solar radio bursts, even how sunspot activity affects crop yields here in Sri Lanka, and we still contribute data to international projects like the AAVSO and global asteroid-search campaigns. Small country, real science.

To support that work, we built Colombo's most capable observatory, home to the only 14-inch Ritchey-Chrétien telescope in Sri Lanka, and opened it up to travelers through Ceylon Astrotourism, dinner-and-stargazing nights, solar viewing, mobile sky safaris from Mirissa to Sigiriya.

S&T Telescopes is where all of it comes together. Two decades of publishing, teaching, researching, and building one of the region's most respected astronomy communities. now poured into the telescopes we put in your hands. We don't just want to sell you an instrument. We want you to actually use it, and love what you see.
